Walker Searches for Big Results on Cayuga Lake

UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. (Aug. 19) — Putting the last Bassmaster Elite Series tournament behind him, pro angler David Walker is determined to be fishing on Championship Sunday this weekend at Cayuga Lake.

While the Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler finds himself in unfamiliar water again this weekend, Walker feels much better about his chances on Cayuga Lake. Finding himself in more comfortable conditions, he can get back to the basics of what makes him a veteran in the Bassmaster Elite Series.

“I’ve never fished here before but I have fished Oneida, one of the other Finger Lakes,” Walker said. “Cayuga Lake seems to be pretty similar other than the fact that this one has a lot more largemouth bass as opposed to the other one, which was mainly smallmouth. I think that’s really the main difference I’ve found so far.

“The weights will still be good this weekend but way better than they were in the last event. I think all of the anglers struggled with conditions we weren’t accustomed to. This week on Cayuga Lake will be a welcomed relief with surroundings we are little more use to in tournament action.”

Walker will launch from Frontenac Park at 6:15 a.m. ET as a man on a mission. With expectations of only large bags, Walker will look to climb up the leaderboard when he weighs in daily at 3:15 p.m.

“This is crunch time for me,” Walker said. “If I don’t catch them here, I have a lot riding on me moving forward. Philadelphia really put me in the position where I’ve got to catch them, there’s no coasting. I’ve got to make something happen so I can make the Classic and the end-of-the-year championship as well.

“I’m going to put in a lot more hours to find more options of fishing areas than what I normally would. Normally I would find a couple places and think that would be good enough.

“Most events you get down about a couple small things, but this weekend I’m not going to let those things bother me. I’m going to spend practice fishing as hard as I can and continue that mentality into the tournament.”
