Quality, Not Quantity, is on the Mind of Pro Angler David Walker

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (April 30) — Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat pro angler David Walker isn’t worried about the quantity of fish he’ll catch this week at the Bassmaster Elite Series event on the Sacramento River — it’s the quality.

“I know I’m going to catch some fish, so that’s a good-news situation,” Walker said. “Any time I’m at take-off knowing I’m going to go get bites and catch fish, that sure makes for a much more interesting day.”

But will he be able to land enough bigger fish to contend for the title?

“This place does have a lot of fish in it,” Walker said. “My concern is my size of the fish is certainly not up to what I’m anticipating to be doing well here, but I’ve never fished here, so it’s kind of hard for me to give a good assessment. I don’t really know what it’s going to take to win or get a check.”

And even if he has a good day on the Delta, Walker still won’t be sure how he matches up against the other Elite Series pros.

“I feel like I’ve been fishing the same way,” Walker said. “I’m just going to bear down, catch as many as I can, take them to the weigh-in, and see where I end up.”

Walker compared the Sacramento River to the Sabine River, where Elite Series anglers fished in March. A Delta brings different challenges to bass pros.

“It’s all about the location,” Walker said. “There are not a lot of options as to how to fish; it’s more about where to fish.”

Competing against Bassmaster’s best hasn’t been Walker’s only battle this week. He drove from his Sevierville, Tenn., home to northern California, transporting his Cabela’s/GEICO bass boat.

“Thankfully it was trouble-free,” Walker said. “That was a long way, the longest I’ve ever driven. It was just over 2,300 miles, and it took three and a half days of driving.”

Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat pro angler David Walker will concentrate on the quality of fish he catches during this weekend’s tournament in Sacramento, Calif.
