David Walker Hopes for the Best While Fishing Lake Havasu for the First Time

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. (May 7) — Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat angler David Walker is in the middle of a solid professional career, but he’ll feel like a rookie during the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament this weekend on Lake Havasu.

Why? Because Walker had never fished Lake Havasu until this week in practice, so he’s not sure what to expect when the tournament begins Thursday.

“I don’t even know what size fish live in here,” Walker said. “I don’t know what’s a good stringer, what’s a mediocre one. It’s unusual for me to be in this situation, but it’s reminiscent of when I first started fishing the tournaments. The first few years I fished, most of the lakes I went to I had no history on those as well. It’s kind of like a déjà vu feeling.”

Walker did well early in his career, so he’s hoping history can repeat itself.
“It worked for me then,” Walker said, “so hopefully I can make it work again.”

Walker is coming off a 21st-place place finish last weekend on the Sacramento River that moved him to 31st in the Toyota Angler of the Year standings. However, he’s not sure what to expect on the first day of weigh-ins.

“You can’t say, ‘I’ve got to do this, I’ve got to do that,’ because you don’t really know,” Walker said. “Obviously I’ve got to catch as many fish as I can, but I’m not sure what to expect when it comes time to weigh in. I’m just going to keep it simple and go catch as many fish as I can and see where I end up.”

The full field of 112 anglers fish two days before being cut approximately in half for Saturday, with the top 12 fishing on Sunday.

Walker has enjoyed his time on Lake Havasu, though he admits he has done a little more sightseeing this week.

“It’s a lake in the middle of the desert,” Walker said. “It’s the craziest thing. Everybody needs to see it because it’s so scenic. It’s pretty amazing. Being my first time here, all day long while I’m fishing I’m totally looking this way, looking that way. I took entirely too many cell phone pictures.”
