Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat Pro David Walker Optimistic After Making Cut

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (May 1) — Another good day on the Sacramento River moved Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat angler David Walker up the Bassmaster Elite Series standings Friday, but he has his sights set a little higher.

Walker made the cut after two days of fishing on the California Delta, and he’s within striking distance of the top-12 anglers who will battle it out Sunday for the tournament title. The field was cut down from 112 anglers to 52 for Saturday.

“I think the top 12 is within reach, only because of the fact that there is such a realistic chance of catching a giant stringer here,” Walker said. “Other places, once you’re that far back you’ve got to be realistic, but here it’s crazy what a 12-pounder will do for you. I’m going to get back after ‘em tomorrow.”

Walker bagged five fish weighing 15 pounds, 2 ounces Friday, bringing his two-day total to 34 pounds, 3 ounces.

“It was a little bit tougher today on most of the people out there,” Walker said. “I’m not real sure what to attribute that to, and it was pretty tough on me as well. I still managed to eke out 15 pounds because the next fish was a little bit bigger than the next and a little bit bigger than the next.

“I didn’t have one of those giant fish that you can really gain a lot of ground with, but I’m getting enough bites where I can do that.”

He’s a little more than four pounds away from the top 12, but one big catch and Walker is right there.

“You find that one big fish that you can catch, and it changes the entire event,” Walker said. “If you don’t find that one, then it’s like, ‘What am I doing wrong?’ “

Most anglers brought in less weight Friday, including Walker, but he was still able to peck away and move up three spots in the overall standings.

“I feel a little more comfortable with the area that I’m fishing now,” Walker said. “I abandoned one and went elsewhere to get that stone out of my shoe, so to speak. It was bugging me, and having done that now I can concentrate from where I’ve been starting.”

And he hopes one big fish comes his way Saturday.

“I’m ready to get out there and get after it tomorrow,” Walker said. “Let’s see how it goes.”
