8th Place Earns Cox LEER “Cover Cash”

John Cox was about to notch yet another top 10 finish at the Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Ouachita, but you wouldn’t have known it when I walked up on him in the parking lot. To be honest, Cox looked a little pissed as he stowed his rods and prepared for weigh-in.

And you can’t blame him. His competitive fire, and not being satisfied with anything less than 1st place, has helped Cox win well over a million dollars with a rod and reel in his career.

Disappointment quickly turned to excitement when the 2016 Forrest Wood Cup Champion saw the oversized LEER “Cover Cash” check in my hands with his name on it. Cox immediately scanned his competitors tow vehicles in the parking lot and realized he’d be winning some Toyota Bonus Bucks money, too.

“Bonus programs like Leer and Toyota provide are great because they are kind of like their own little tournament,” Cox said. “Anytime I qualify for a final day of a derby me and the other guys immediately size up the competition to see who we have to beat to win Cover Cash and Bonus Bucks. It makes everything a little more competitive and fun. Throughout my career I’ve probably made upwards of $30,000 from contingencies.”

Cox has participated in the Toyota Bonus Bucks Program since 2015, and bought himself a LEER truck cap at the beginning of the 2018 FLW Tour season to make himself eligible for “Cover Cash”.

“As a professional angler I need a tow vehicle to get my boat to the lake and I need a truck cap to keep my gear secure and dry,” said Cox. “I choose to run a Toyota Tundra and a Leer truck cap because they make my decision easy, honestly. They make products I trust and I get paid bonus money if I’m the highest finisher in their contingency programs. It’s a win-win. ”

Cox’s logic proved wise yet again at the conclusion of the 2018 Forrest Wood Cup. While an 8th place finish was short of his ultimate goal, it was high enough to beat out all fellow “Cover Cash” participants as well as being the 2nd highest finish among Toyota Bonus Buck participants. Earning Cox an extra $2,500 on top of his Forrest Wood Cup tournament winnings, all for using eligible products.

You don’t have to be a Tour level pro like John Cox to reap the benefits of the LEER “Cover Cash” program, however, you just have to own a LEER truck cap or tonneau cover and fish a sponsored event. “Cover Cash” pays out on a myriad of tournament trails like FLW BFLs, Bassmaster Opens, A.B.A. Open series, and several walleye fishing tournaments to name a few.
