Tuesday Tip: Other Lake Types
Presented by Megabass
Last week, we gave some tips for clear-water lakes. Today, let’s look at the man-made lakes that have a bit of natural stain to the water. Actually, this will include many of the lakes in the country, ranging from Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, to Buggs Island lake in Virginia.
These lakes are usually the hardest hit by the dog days. Unlike a clear water lake, these waters usually don’t form a clearly defined thermocline, which helps to group the fish a bit. Stained water lakes in the summer are known for “one here, one there”, type fishing, unless the lakes have very distinct generating schedules that really affect feeding.
These stained summer lakes usually have two distinct bass populations. A “deep” population (usually 6-12 feet), and a super shallow population in 3 feet or less. The deep population is not the same as the deep, post-spawn schools that had lots of big bass in them. These dog day schools are usually smaller, with smaller fish, and mid-diving crankbaits like the Deep-X 150 or 300 are usually the top producers.
The shallow fish are the consistent ones under this scenario. Shallow cover like overhanging trees, logs, docks and pads will rule, and this is the prime time of year for frog fishing and shallow, power cranking. Remember to fish the lures fast. That is a big key in the summer.
In most of these lakes, about half of the fish are in that deeper water, and half of them are right on the bank. Just choose your comfort zone, and focus on the details.
Best of luck!

Confidence has McClelland Poised for Success on Cayuga Lake
UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. (Aug. 19) — As the Bassmaster Elite Series continues on its Northern swing, pro angler Mike McClelland feels right at home for the Aug. 21-24 tournament at Cayuga Lake in Union Springs, N.Y.
While the Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler calls Bella Vista, Ark., home, Cayuga Lake is a body of water on which McClelland feels confident. After dealing with the curveball that the Delaware River threw at him during the previous event, McClelland knows this is his best chance to rebound with what he knows best.
“Well this is definitely going to be a much different event than what we had the week before in Philadelphia,” McClelland said. “There’s going to be an opportunity here to catch both largemouth and smallmouth bass, and it should be a fairly good week with much better fishing for all the anglers as a whole.
“This lake should set up really well to the way I like to fish,” McClelland said. “It’s got a lot of shallow areas to fish with vegetation and boat docks. Usually when I find myself on a lake like this, I pick and choose a couple different places that should produce good results for me and stay there for the majority of the time.”
With a plan already intact, McClelland will launch from Frontenac Park at 6:15 a.m. ET with the rest of the Elite Series anglers in hopes of snagging a big bag consistently for weigh-in at 3:15 p.m.
“There is definitely going to be some big bags brought in from here,” McClelland said. “We should see most bags in the upper teens to low-20 pounds this week. However, not everyone is going to be able to catch that kind of weight. Once you catch five, the goal is definitely going to be to keep going and continue to cull. It’s not going to be you catch five and then start running around looking for new stuff to fish. You’re going to stick with what you’ve been working with and try to cull up as much as you can.
“One thing about these Northern lakes, they are full of fish but you generally have to go through a few to get to a weight you want to reach.”

Walker Searches for Big Results on Cayuga Lake
UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. (Aug. 19) — Putting the last Bassmaster Elite Series tournament behind him, pro angler David Walker is determined to be fishing on Championship Sunday this weekend at Cayuga Lake.
While the Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat Elite angler finds himself in unfamiliar water again this weekend, Walker feels much better about his chances on Cayuga Lake. Finding himself in more comfortable conditions, he can get back to the basics of what makes him a veteran in the Bassmaster Elite Series.
“I’ve never fished here before but I have fished Oneida, one of the other Finger Lakes,” Walker said. “Cayuga Lake seems to be pretty similar other than the fact that this one has a lot more largemouth bass as opposed to the other one, which was mainly smallmouth. I think that’s really the main difference I’ve found so far.
“The weights will still be good this weekend but way better than they were in the last event. I think all of the anglers struggled with conditions we weren’t accustomed to. This week on Cayuga Lake will be a welcomed relief with surroundings we are little more use to in tournament action.”
Walker will launch from Frontenac Park at 6:15 a.m. ET as a man on a mission. With expectations of only large bags, Walker will look to climb up the leaderboard when he weighs in daily at 3:15 p.m.
“This is crunch time for me,” Walker said. “If I don’t catch them here, I have a lot riding on me moving forward. Philadelphia really put me in the position where I’ve got to catch them, there’s no coasting. I’ve got to make something happen so I can make the Classic and the end-of-the-year championship as well.
“I’m going to put in a lot more hours to find more options of fishing areas than what I normally would. Normally I would find a couple places and think that would be good enough.
“Most events you get down about a couple small things, but this weekend I’m not going to let those things bother me. I’m going to spend practice fishing as hard as I can and continue that mentality into the tournament.”

2015 Elite Season To Feature Western Swing
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The 2015 Bassmaster Elite Series will feature a pair of tournaments in the Western United States as the world’s greatest bass fishermen test their skills on the Sacramento River out of Sacramento, Calif., April 30-May 3, and Lake Havasu out of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., May 7-10. Both rank in the Top 20 of Bassmaster’s 100 Best Bass Lakes, and it will be the first time since 2010 that the Elites have traveled so far west.
The two Western destinations represent the third and fourth stops of the 2015 Elite season, and both fisheries have been the sites of successful Bassmaster events in the past. B.A.S.S. held the first of eight events on the Sacramento River and California Delta in 1997. In 2007 and 2010, the Elite Series visited the Delta out of Stockton, Calif. Defending Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year (AOY) Aaron Martens won the first, and eight-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier John Crews took the second. The Delta currently ranks 13th on Bassmaster’s list of the 100 Best Bass Lakes.
“It is a pleasure to welcome the Bassmaster Elite Series to Sacramento and our beautiful river,” said Mike Sophia, director of the Sacramento Sports Commission. “Sacramento plays host to the top sports events in the country, from the USGA to USA Track and Field and NCAA events. Bringing the best anglers in the world here and highlighting the natural beauty of our destination will show all we have to offer to anglers and visitors alike.”
Coming in at No. 20 is Lake Havasu, generally considered the best desert lake in the country and a fishery that offers both largemouth and smallmouth bass. The event will be the Elite Series’ first trip to the lake and B.A.S.S.’s first stop there in more than a decade. Bassmaster Elite Series pro Cliff Pirch of Payson, Ariz., finished second in the 2003 Bassmaster Western Open at Lake Havasu, and Elite Series angler John Murray of Phoenix was eighth.
“We can all be proud that our prime fishery will be put in front of fishing fanatics all over the world,” said Doug Traub, president/CEO of the Lake Havasu City Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We expect that the entire town will be packed with fans who are here to see the Top 100 anglers in the world compete for a series-wide top prize of $100,000. We also thank all of our partners who came together to bring this world-class event to Lake Havasu for the first time. It’s taken nearly two years of effort to bring the Bassmaster Elite Series back to the Western U.S.”
“We’re thrilled to bring our premier anglers and events back to the West,” said Bruce Akin, CEO of B.A.S.S. “The West offers outstanding angling, beautiful venues and first-class hospitality. The Elite Series is a national tournament circuit, and bringing it to California and Arizona gives us the opportunity to test our anglers while serving our fans and stakeholders in the area. These will be great events!
“The many thousands of B.A.S.S. members and other fans in the region will be able to see the very best anglers in the world compete on a first-rate fishery unlike any they’ve fished on since the Elite Series was launched.”
“It’s always great to travel to a new venue because we draw huge crowds,” said Trip Weldon, B.A.S.S. tournament director. “Lake Havasu is a very unique spot in the country, and the fishing has really improved from what it was years ago. Our anglers are looking forward to competing out West again,” Weldon said.
There will be six other events in the 2015 Elite season plus a Toyota Bassmaster AOY Championship tournament that will crown the sport’s best angler of 2015 and send dozens of other top anglers to the 2016 Bassmaster Classic. The dates and locations of the remaining events will be announced in early September.
