New York’s Steve Pickard Takes Lead On Connecticut River

New York’s Steve Pickard Takes Lead On Connecticut River

HARTFORD, Conn. — Steve Pickard had never fished on the Connecticut River until four days ago, but that didn’t stop him from taking the first-day lead on the river in the 2015 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Divisional.AdI46G54psyeWL_dZKGbxXAUSkXpPlYLZMWXgM9UBXGqhOWeQmFjIg8I7lx0jg3lp-bx_-G8AhfDLzMQIwCfSU33YrqY1epK_Byin4nhRbKcxmr9ZHpdlUK5hbuY6HhnI-eZSUuqvRloK4r8FrYHPYfpic-SYDn-SO3gkQ4=s0-d-e1-ft

“When I got here on Saturday, I ran as much water as possible,” said Pickard, of Fulton, N.Y. “I got on a deal on Sunday and started working my way up and down the river to see where it works.”

The “deal” he’s talking about is a pattern he figured out on the waterway that’s really not much different than what other competitors are doing — except for one thing.

“I have one distinguishing feature, one key ingredient,” he said, declining to say what the pattern or the secret tweak is. “That’s what is making the difference.”

It’s no surprise he’s not divulging much information about his tactic. The tournament is in its first day of three, and the winner will likely have only a margin of ounces based on the weights here on the Connecticut River.

Only 12 anglers out of 108 managed to collect limits of five bass in today’s opening round, and the average weight of each bass is a scant 1 pound, 6 ounces. Twenty-three anglers didn’t weigh in a bass.

Pickard, however, got two really good fish that he wasn’t expecting — a 2 1/2-pound largemouth and a 4-pound smallmouth. Those two, added to his three average-size bass, added up to a leading weight of 9 pounds, 8 ounces. Currently, he’s more than a pound up on his closest competitor.

“It will be hard to get another 9 or 10 pounds,” Pickard said. “This river is extremely tough. I’m hoping for a good couple of days. The mornings have been a better bite, as long as the tide is moving.”

Pickard is competing to win the tournament, of course, but he’s also working toward winning the top spot on his team. The best performer from each state B.A.S.S. Nation qualifies for the 2015 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship, Nov. 5-7, on Louisiana’s Ouachita River. He’s ahead in the New York B.A.S.S. Nation now by 1 pound, 2 ounces. If he can maintain it, he gets an invitation to compete in the championship, and if he wins there, he’ll get to move on to the biggest stage in bass fishing, the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro in March 2016.

Other competitors in a position to move on are Alex Wetherell, Connecticut; Mark Desjardin, Maine; George Barnes, Massachusetts; David LeBlanc, New Hampshire; Larry MacPhail, Ontario; Philip Casto, Rhode Island; Cesar Ventura Pecellin Munoz, Spain; and James Knox, Vermont.

Each state is in competition, too. The state whose team members weigh in the heaviest cumulative weight wins a Triton/Mercury boat package valued at $38,000. Pickard’s catch helped propel the New York team into the first-round lead with 52 pounds, 2 ounces. Behind New York are Connecticut with 44-10 and Ontario with 38-11.

The biggest bass brought to the scales so far in the Eastern Divisional is a 4-pound, 10-ounce bass caught by Dave Andrews, who is fishing for the New Hampshire state team.

Competition resumes Thursday. Anglers will take off from Riverside Park at 6:15 a.m. ET, and they’ll weigh in at the park at 2:15 p.m. Keep up with the action at Bassmaster.com.

Niggemeyer’s Fort Gibson Set Ups

James Niggemeyer finished 17th at Fort Gibson , a solid finish under changing conditions. Niggemeyer stated he relied on two combinations, here is a look.

10421495_10154230414514689_6130934627652585293_n
“These combos did the lion share of fish catching for me last week at the Bassmaster Central OPEN on Fort Gibson in Oklahoma.  The Strike King KVD 2.5 crank bait in Chartreuse Sexy Shad and the Rage Tail Rage Bug (one of my new favorites) in Black and Blue.  I paired the Rage bug with a 3/8oz Tour Grade Tungsten weight on 20 Gamma Edge Fluorocarbon and pitched it to wood in the back end of creeks.

I cranked the KVD 2.5 around rock and gravel with a St. Croix Target Cranker fiberglass rod.  I like that rod for square bill crank baits, because it allows me to make pinpoint cast due to its 6’10” length and Gamma Green Polyflex line in 14lb test.  The fish were also located in the back of creeks nearby large schools of Threadfin shad.

Both outfits had Ardent reels, but I used the Grand with the higher gear ratio for pitching and the Elite with a 6.5:1 gear ratio for cranking.”

Legendary Angler Gary Klein Joins Duckett Fishing Professional Staff

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. – Gary Klein, one of the most accomplished and respected bass anglers of all time, has joined Duckett Fishing’s professional staff, the company’s president and CEO, Boyd Duckett, announced today.

Klein will compete with Duckett Fishing rods and work with the company on the development of new, specialized rods, including a signature series.

“We are honored to welcome Gary Klein to Duckett Fishing. Any company in our business would be extremely excited to bring in a record-setting pro angler. Gary has been to thirty – I’ll repeat that, thirty – Bassmaster Classics. That’s almost unbelievable,” Duckett said.

“On a personal level, I have enormous respect for Gary. He brings experience, class and a world of expertise to every aspect of his pro fishing career, and we’re lucky to have an opportunity to lean on Gary for some of that knowledge and experience. This is a good day for Duckett Fishing.”

Klein, who lives in Weatherford, Texas, began his pro fishing career in the late 1970’s and is one of the sport’s top 10 all-time money winners. Among his many accomplishments, Klein has earned two B.A.S.S. Angler-of-the-Year titles, eight Bassmaster event championships, two FLW titles and a U.S. Open championship. Klein’s 30 Bassmaster Classic appearances have spanned five consecutive decades.

Klein joins several other top-name anglers on Duckett Fishing’s pro staff – a group that includes, among others, Elite Series champion anglers Dean Rojas, Terry Scroggins, Kelly Jordon, Tim Horton and Duckett.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to be able to work with a company and a group of people that have a true passion for the sport of fishing. Duckett Fishing has a commitment not only to creating and manufacturing the highest quality products, they stand behind their products and their people,” Klein said.

“The bonus to this getting to work with Boyd. I have gotten to know Boyd well during the past five years, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a businessman and a person,” Klein said. “Boyd understands how to do things the right way, and that’s how he and Sean Schuyler operate the business.”

Klein’s addition to the Duckett Fishing team is not the first joint venture that Klein and Duckett have undertaken. They are two of the primary creators of the format now utilized on Outdoor Channel’s Major League Fishing television series. Klein and Duckett were chosen by peers to jointly lead a pro anglers coalition that owns half of the Major League Fishing franchise.

Ramapo College Wins FLW Championship On The Chesapeake Bay

NORTH EAST, Md. (Sept. 13, 2015) – The Ramapo College team of Andy Zapf of Whippany, New Jersey, and Andrew Annuzzi of Old Bridge, New Jersey, won the FLW College Fishing Northern Conference Championship on the Chesapeake Bay Sunday with a two-day total of eight bass weighing 19 pounds, 12 ounces. The victory earned the club $4,000 and qualified the team for the 2016 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

“It’s such a great feeling to come here and get the win this year,” said Annuzzi, a junior majoring in Environmental Science. “I competed in the Conference Championship last year, but we didn’t qualify. This will be my first College Fishing National Championship appearance and I couldn’t be more excited.”

“My older brother (Joseph) had won a few College Fishing events so it feels good to get one of my own,” said Zapf, a senior majoring in Accounting. “This will be my third time to the National Championship and it’s my last year of eligibility so we had to get it done this weekend.”

The duo said that they had a solid three days of practice on the fishery before the tournament, but only managed to catch three bass in their practice period. They decided to concentrate on the only area where they could find fish – the McDaniel Yacht Basin.

“Yesterday, the first day of the tournament, we stuck it out in the marina all day long,” Zapf said. “We caught three fish by 8:30 a.m., then didn’t catch another keeper all day long. We ended the day with 6 pounds and were sitting in 11th place.

“Today, we decided that if the marina wasn’t producing we would leave and try to find some new stuff to fish,” Zapf continued. “We caught one keeper early, but we decided to leave the marina around 9:30.”

The Ramapo club said that they bounced around and tried to find another area that would produce, but only managed to find two small keepers. They ended up returning to the marina to try to scrounge up a limit.

“The tide had pulled out, and we ended up catching two more in the marina,” Zapf said. “On our way back to check-in we stopped in a pocket a ½ mile from the ramp and were able to cull out a squeaker with just 20 minutes to go.”

“The key for us was definitely sticking to our plan and concentrating on that marina,” Annuzzi said. “We would pick apart every spot we could, then we would re-start and cycle through it again. We knew the fish were there.”

The Ramapo College said that they caught the majority of their fish on green-pumpkin jigs with a craw or beaver trailer, with a few coming on a drop-shot rigged Strike King Rage Craw.

The top 10 teams that advanced to the 2016 FLW College Fishing National Championship are:

1st: Ramapo College – Andrew Annuzzi, Old Bridge, N.J. and Andrew Zapf, Whippany, N.J. (eight bass, 19-12, $4,000)
2nd: Christopher Newport University – Travis Riley, Lynchburg, Va., and Seth Winslow, Chesapeake, Va. (five bass, 16-13, $2,000)
3rd: Pennsylvania State University – Matt Bakewell, Brownsville, Pa., and Tyler Smith, Pine Grove, Pa. (five bass, 15-10, $1,000)
4th: University of Akron – Anthony Villalba, Silver Lake, Ohio, and Robert Webber, Elyria, Ohio (six bass, 14-2, $1,000)
5th: Adrian College – Jeff Morton, Troy, Mich., and Nickolas Marsh, Commerce Township, Mich. (five bass, 13-12, $1,000)
6th: Fairmont State University – Landon Paul and Ryan Houser, both of Fairmont, W. Va. (seven bass, 13-10)
7th: Adrian College – Jarrett Martin, Gallipolis, Ohio, and Jacob Bayer, Westfield, Mich. (six bass, 13-6)
8th: Shenandoah University – Thomas Arens and Billy Arens, both of Purcellville, Va. (seven bass, 13-4)
9th: West Virginia University – Jacob Marshall, Catonsville, Md., and Matthew Combs, Huber Heights, Ohio (nine bass, 11-1)
