Winds Force Postponing Second Competition Day In Angler of the Year Championship

ESCANABA, Mich. — Bassmaster Elite Series tournament officials postponed competition in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship today after building winds created unsafe boating conditions.

“In the interest of safety, today’s fishing has been canceled,” said Trip Weldon, B.A.S.S. tournament director. Winds from the south, including gusts to 35 miles, and 5-foot seas were predicted for today, and a small craft advisory was in effect. “We will err on the side of caution and the safety of our anglers and their marshals,” he added.

The Top 50 Elite Series bass anglers are competing this week on Big Bay de Noc and Little Bay de Noc here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Catches were outstanding in the first competition round Thursday, which was led by Brett Hite of Phoenix, Ariz., with five bass weighing a total of 24 pounds, 6 ounces. Winds were light and weather conditions favorable for fishing the waters just off Lake Michigan on Thursday.

But the Bays de Noc are exposed to a south wind, which has virtually all of Lake Michigan to build. Having seen the waters at their worst during practice for the event, several of the competitors endorsed the decision.

Weldon said he and other officials plan for competition to continue on Saturday, weather permitting. “We will make that call in the morning,” he said. Current weather forecasts show some improvement by Saturday.

The event is built around three days of competition as Elite anglers battle for the coveted title of Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year, as well as berths in the 2015 Bassmaster Classic. Saturday was originally planned as a day off for the anglers, many of whom are slated to participate in Bassmaster University seminars during the afternoon at Ludington Park in Escanaba.

The seminars are part of the Bassmaster Fan and Military Appreciation Day, which includes an outdoor expo featuring displays and activities from Bassmaster Elite Series Sponsors, as well as booths from food and other vendors from the Escanaba area. Shifting competition to Saturday would affect the Bassmaster University sessions, but the Fan and Military Appreciation Day will continue as planned. Fans who wish to attend should visit Bassmaster.com for up-to-date scheduling advisories.

V&M Joe Everette Hawg Bomb Jig

With memories of the spawn still fresh in our heads, prepping for next years spawning season and sight fishing for big bass sitting on beds has already begun for many fisherman.  The opportunity to land the “fish of a lifetime”, all while being able to see the fish grab the lure creates a level of excitement that is unmatched in our sport.

Enter the first sight fishing specific jig from V&M Baits, the Joe Everette Hawg Bomb, which BassEast was fortunate enough to obtain and test after its introduction during the ICAST 2014.

Fishing for bedding bass requires a bait that draws the attention of the fish on the bed, as more often than not, a bedding fish will be very selective in what it deems to be a “threat” that requires action.  V&M, with the input of Joe Everette and Cliff Pace, developed a truly unique jig with features designed to get and hold attention of the most selective bedding fish.

With a stand up head equipped with a 6/0 Gamakatsu hook, the Hawg Bomb displays a large profile in a position which will maximize the effects of its rubber skirting material, and when we say skirting material, we mean a LOT oif skirting material!  The Hawg Bomb has TWICE the amount of rubber, along with several longer strands of flashy mylar extending from the center of the skirt.  This combination produces three things: a larger over profile, a longer overall profile, and the ability to impart a great deal of skirt motion with just the slightest movement of the line – simultaneously allowing the angler to keep it in place longer while driving bedding female bass insane.

Hawg Bomb!

The Hawg Bomb will be available in a variety of color combinations hand selected by Everette and Pace, and will be in stores well before the next spawning season.  Let the dreams of springtime bed fishing begin!!!

Winona State U Wins on Kentucky Lake

GILBERTSVILLE, KY. (Sept. 14, 2014) – The Winona State University team of Cade Laufenberg of Stoddard, Wis., and Wyatt Stout of  Winona, Minn., won the FLW College Fishing Central Conference Invitational tournament on Kentucky Lake Sunday with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 28 pounds, 1 ounce. The victory earned the club $4,000 and qualified the team for the 2015 FLW College Fishing National Championship.
The Winona pair caught one of only two five-bass limits on the second and final day of competition to vault from 14th place to first.
“Yesterday we were packing up our stuff and ready to head home when we found out we had made it into the top 15,” said Stout. “To go out and catch what we did today was unreal.”
“We were expecting to get knocked off (the hotseat), but it worked out,” said Laufenberg. “Towards the end of the weigh-in I felt like there was a 50-50 chance we’d get passed up, because I knew Eastern Kentucky University didn’t have a big bag. I was just up there praying and hoping, and trying to focus on the fact that’d we’d made the National Championship.
“On Saturday we ran south to Paris, Tenn., and fished a flat that was 3 to 6 feet deep, and had grass and shell beds scattered on it,” Laufenberg explained. “We were just looking for seagulls diving on bait and when we could get to them in time we could sometimes catch as many as 10 or 15 fish on consecutive casts with a lipless crankbait. The seagulls were kind of bouncing back and forth between two general areas and we just put marker buoys on them and hopped between them.
“Today it was sunny and the wind had really died down,” continued Laufenberg. “We had a topwater bite for a little bit in the morning and caught a few on a lipless crankbait. Later on, we actually started Carolina-rigging because the fish weren’t chasing bait on the surface to let us know where they were. On our way back we stopped at another spot where the fish were schooling and caught them working a Strike King KVD Sexy Dawg about as fast as we could.”
“I had caught one good one first thing in the morning, but we culled out four of our other fish where they were schooling,” said Stout. “Making that stop was a huge upgrade.”
A number of good decisions played a key role in the duo’s win.

“We wanted to make the long run down toward Paris and get way from the crowds,” Stout said. “We found a few spots that had fish on them and just devoted ourselves to them.”
“Because of the weather on Sunday it only took about 45 minutes for us to get to our spots and we had a lot more fishing time,” said Laufenberg. “It let us settle in and relax and make some really good decisions with the time we had to work with.”
The pair said that they Carolina-rigged a red shad-colored 7-inch worm and that their lipless crankbait of choice was a shad-colored Spro Aruku Shad.
