2015 College Dates Announced

MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 5, 2014) – FLW announced today the schedule for the 2015 FLW College Fishing season and several enhancements for the 2015 season, highlighted by the addition of a new FLW College Fishing Open Tournament offering a Ranger Z117 to the winning team and advancing the top 10 teams directly to the 2016 FLW College Fishing National Championship. The event will be open to teams from any conference, and there is no limit on the number of boats each school can enter.
“Our goal is for this to be the single largest gathering of collegiate anglers in history,” said Kathy Fennel, FLW President of Operations.
The two-day tournament, featuring a full field both days, will be held March 20-21 on Kentucky Lake and should feature incredible fishing action given the lake’s ability to produce big catches that time of year.
To better accommodate growing demand, FLW will no longer restrict field sizes at qualifying events. Participation is also being opened to full-time graduate students at four-year colleges and full-time undergraduate students at community colleges. Previously participation was limited to full-time undergraduate students at four-year colleges and fields were limited to 50 boats.
Each FLW College Fishing conference will host three qualifying tournaments and a Conference Championship (previously called an Invitational), except for the Western Conference, which will host two qualifying tournaments and a Conference Championship in 2015.
“This change, along with opening the fields, is intended to help cut travel costs for Western Conference teams, many of which have to travel substantially more miles than teams in other divisions to have representation in three tournaments,” said Kevin Hunt, FLW College Fishing Tournament Director.
The top 15 teams from each qualifier will advance to a Conference Championship. From there the top 10 teams will advance to the 2016 FLW College Fishing National Championship, and one member of the national championship team will ultimately advance to the 2016 Forrest Wood Cup for a shot at winning $500,000 – the biggest payday in bass fishing. To determine who punches his or her ticket to the 2016 Forrest Wood Cup, the national champions will fish head-to-head on an undisclosed body of water the day after the 2016 National Championship is complete. They will switch from teammates to opponents for a final winner-take-all showdown that pays a minimum of $10,000 as a Forrest Wood Cup qualifier.
In a move that mirrors recent changes on the Walmart FLW Tour, FLW College Fishing anglers will wear their own jerseys at the 2015 National Championship and going forward, greatly enhancing the value that each team’s local sponsors receive.
Registration for the 2015 season opens Dec. 15, 2014, for teams from clubs represented in the 2014 FLW College Fishing National Championship. All other teams may register beginning Dec. 16, 2014. Teams can register at CollegeFishing.com or by calling 270.252.1000. Teams fishing the 2015 FLW College Fishing National Championship will receive a travel allowance based on the distance traveled to the event, but all other travel allowances have been discontinued. There are no entry fees in FLW College Fishing tournaments. Phones are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time Monday through Friday.
“We are looking forward to a tremendous 2015 season as we continue to build on the momentum of ICAST, an incredible 2014 Forrest Wood Cup in Columbia, SC, newsstand sales that rank FLW Bass Fishing magazine as the best-selling title in its category, our recent NBC network broadcast success and our recent New York Times cover story,” said Trisha Blake, FLW President of Marketing. “All of this means more opportunity for students fishing FLW College Fishing, the nation’s largest collegiate tournament trail.”
The 2015 FLW College Fishing season is highlighted by the internationally televised FLW College Fishing National Championship, which features qualifiers from the 2014 calendar year. The championship tournament will be held April 17-19 at Lake Murray in Columbia, South Carolina, hosted by Capital City/Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism.

McClelland One of Select Few to Bag a Win during 2014 Bassmaster Elite Season

BELLA VISTA, Ark. (Nov. 4) — Highlighted by a hard-fought win on Table Rock Lake, Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat Pro angler Mike McClelland finished his 2014 season by double qualifying for his 10th career GEICO Bassmaster Classic.

“Considering the competition is better now than it’s ever been, any year you win a Bassmaster Elite tournament you have to walk away feeling good with the way you fished,” McClelland said. “This year was even more special due to the simple fact there were essentially only eight winners.

“I was even happier to double qualify for my 10th trip to the GEICO Bassmaster Classic, one of the most prestigious events and titles an angler can win other than Angler of the Year. Winning and finishing as high as I did in the points feels pretty darn good.”

Already locked into the 2015 Bassmaster Classic with his Table Rock Lake win, McClelland made sure he qualified on points as well by earning the 26th overall slot in the 2014 Angler of the Year standings. McClelland says his ability to rescue himself in tournaments that didn’t start off the way he would have liked was the difference.

“As hard as it is to grasp, the last two events of the year leading into the Angler of the Year championship were really big for me,” McClelland said. “The Delaware River was one of those events where I had a miserable first day but was able to rebound on Day 2 and bring in a solid stringer that moved me up more than 30 places in points. That was a big deal and it gave me momentum going into the final regular-season event on Cayuga Lake, where I finished 13th, gaining the most points I could gain without fishing the final day of the tournament.

“Aside from my win at Table Rock Lake, those were really big events for me. A stumble at either of those last tournaments could have kept me from double qualifying with the Angler of the Year points.”

Capturing his seventh career win and overcoming tournament woes, McClelland proved his focus was on the bigger picture.

“I think this season was one of redemption,” McClelland said. “I had a couple of first days through the course of the season that really could have wrecked the entire year, but I was able to overcome in those situations. Even if I didn’t draw a check at one or two of those events, I still made a big turnaround and gained a lot of valuable points.

“I probably could have ended up higher in points. Any time you win an event and you get that full 100 points from one event, you hope that helps you finish a bit stronger in the Angler of the Year standings than I ended up being. But as a whole with winning an event, double qualifying, and everything else, this season was really positive. It was a success any way you look at it.”

A victory on Table Rock Lake and double qualifying for the 2015 GEICO Bassmaster Classic were among Cabela’s/GEICO For Your Boat angler Mike McClelland’s season highlights.

Testing the new DEPS Slide Swimmer 175

BassEast’s Chris Murphy and John Hutchins had some fun testing the new Deps Slide Swimmer 175 with some great results!!! Listen closely for the Johnny Bass references.

Features

  • Made out of ABS Plastic
  • Features soft silicon skin
  • The 175 will use Jointed 8 Rings to connect the bodies and for eye ties. This will aid in strength for a shorter sized bait.
  • The 250 will use longer heavier duty Heaton screws for body connections and eye ties.
  • The Heaton used to join the bodies on the 250 will be adjustable.  The longer you leave the Heaton the wider action, and the shorter the Heaton the tighter, quicker action the bait has.
  • The Silicon Skin will still be removable and the weights will still be on the outside of the body allowing for easy modification. The slide swimmers come standard with a Rate of Fall of about 5 feet per 10 seconds. Adding weight or taking away weight can be done with the new models.
  • Color line up options increases. The clear ABS plastic allows for ghost & clear coloring patterns. The original colors to date will also be available.
  • A Spring Weight is added to front body. With a slow steady retrieve the spring weight does not emit any sounds just like the original, but when the bait is jerked or fished with a faster retrieve the weighted ball bounces of the walls of the bait producing fish enticing sounds. There is also a slight vibration as the bait falls.
