Randy Howell’s 5 tips for Cranking Up Fickle Fall-Transition Bass

Fall can sometimes be one of the most challenging times of the year to consistently locate and catch bass. Yes, fish can be very aggressive in the fall, but there’s so much bait in the water this time of year, it’s sometimes hard to get them to bite.

Randy Howell with two of his biggest from Day 2

Fall fish can be fickle. That said, this is one of my favorite times of the year to crank a medium to shallow crankbait like the HOWELLER DMC and the HOWELLER DMC PLUS.

A couple of things to keep in mind in October and November: baitfish are pretty visible, and everything – both bait and bass – are progressively moving shallower. Understanding where fish are laying and then getting your cranks down to the right depth are really important.

When you’re looking for these transitioning fish, keep in mind that they’re not super shallow yet. They will be soon – this is where a bait like the HOWELLER DMC SQ or PRIMETYME CB 1.5 will shine – but for now, the Howeller and Howeller Plus hit the depth ranges you want to focus on: 5 to 9 feet for the Howeller, 8 to 10 feet for the Howeller Plus.

FALL FISH CAN BE FICKLE. THAT SAID, THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TIMES OF THE YEAR TO CRANK A MEDIUM TO SHALLOW CRANKBAIT LIKE THE HOWELLER DMC AND THE HOWELLER DMC PLUS – Randy Howell
1. The EBS difference: Start out with your baits set on Electronic Baitfish Sounds (EBS) Shad™. That’s the third setting on your Team Livingston EBS MultiTouch™ baits – it’s a very intense sound that I think works best this time of year. No matter where in the country you’re fishing, the added attraction of EBS will give you an automatic advantage.

2. Focus on creek arms: Work your way into creek arms first. Look for shad visibly popping on the surface, or on your electronis as you idle in. Start with creek channel pockets that have access to deep water. Baitfish and bass will move into these areas first before they get up shallow.

3. Cover water: The best thing about a crankbait is that you can cover a lot of water as you look for fish. I like to fan cast along creek channel shorelines with rock, wood or grass, and I’ll focus on drainages where the water goes from a channel to a flat.

4. Fish deeper for bigger fish: The Howeller Plus is especially effective for bigger fish for two reasons: it’s a bigger bait, and it gets down a little deeper, to where bigger fish tend to hold in the fall. A lot of the time, those bigger fish don’t want to commit to moving up onto those shallow flats yet, so they’ll stay down on a piece of wood or rock in that 8- to 10-foot zone. They like the bigger profile of the Howeller Plus, with all the wobble and vibration and EBS sound.

5. Stick with shad colors: Sounds like a no-brainer, but it’s worth repeating. Fish something like Beauty Shad or Clearwater Shad in clear water, and brighter shad patterns like Melon Shad and Chartreuse Sunrise Shad if water is stained.

FALL CRANKING TERMINAL TACKLE
I prefer a 7-0 medium light rod, 7.3:1 reel and 12-pound fluorocarbon for fall cranking. Good luck and God bless!

Dillard Delivers The Goods At Table Rock Open

Jim Dillard of West Monroe, La., takes the lead on Day 1 of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open #3 presented by Allstate held on Table Rock Lake out of Branson, Mo. Dillard brought 16 pounds, 15 ounces to the scales at Thursday’s weigh-in.

BRANSON, Mo. — It was a slow day of fishing on Table Rock Lake for most of the competition, but Jim Dillard got off to a fast start to take the lead in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open #3 presented by Allstate.AX8jNSbTezIHHDogX-E4LQWjCEZjmkhalQqLXbAX3awv2a_2KoFPwzy1juKm2DMVUorcibs2BlUsuh2xIg44LiAz_Sbk4ohMj1ZqlOMg_giTetiMa171nBcyDs4aUG2a3R1HmqER6Oc1xVYr3VA3lwtRHpWjYoz78WIZDXM=s0-d-e1-ft

After a slow practice, Dillard’s first three bites on Thursday were 4-pounders that helped put him in first place in the pro division with a five-fish limit weighing 16 pounds, 15 ounces. “The day went way better than I expected,” he said. “It turned into a good day.”

The West Monroe, La., angler said he saw one of the 4-pounders he caught Thursday during practice earlier this week. He also saw some more 4-pounders today that he missed. “They would follow my bait, so I know there are more in the area,” he said.

Dillard hopes the cooler weather predicted for this week will turn the fish on as the tournament progresses. “That would be nice,” he said. “I am fishing a little shallow and a little deep. It just depends on what I run to. I am basically running from waypoint to waypoint from around here (on the lower lake) to uplake.”

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Tommy Biffle hopes to make the 2016 GEIGO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro in his home state of Oklahoma by winning this Open. “I am going to be sick if I am not (in the Classic),” he said. “If I don’t make it, I will probably schedule a trip to Afghanistan or something.” After catching a 14-12 limit Thursday and moving into second place, Biffle might be able to avoid that Afghanistan trip.

The Wagoner, Okla., pro caught plenty of keepers in practice, but the cold front that passed through this week slowed down his fishing. “I thought today was going to be better than what it was,” he said. “I just didn’t get as many keeper bites as I had been getting in practice.”

Biffle noted he caught seven keepers relying on one pattern, but he believes Table Rock bass are in transition between summer and fall patterns now. “There are fish out deep and up shallow, and they don’t know where they want to be yet,” he said.

The remaining pros in the Top 5 are: James Watson, Nixa, Mo., in third place with a 14-5 limit; Allen Rude, Pauls Valley, Okla., fourth, 13-14; and James Elam, Tulsa, Okla., in fifth with 13-4.

Nixa, Mo., railroad conductor Jason Newberry relied on his experience on his home lake to catch three keepers weighing 11-3 and take the lead in the co-angler division. “I have spent a lot of time on the water here the last two weeks,” he said. Newberry caught most of his keepers early in the morning on a football jig and tube bait.

Competition will resume Friday morning at 7 a.m. out of Table Rock State Park Marina, and weigh-in will take place in the same location at 3 p.m. Saturday’s weigh-in will move to the Branson Landing Water Fountain near the Bass Pro Shops at 1 Bass Pro Drive in Branson, Mo.

The Branson/Lakes Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (www.explorebranson.com) is hosting this event.

LC Gunfish Reviewed

The Lucky Craft Gunfish line is the premium topwater that you’ve been waiting for since the days of your Daddy’s Zara Spook. With modern technology, the Gunfish now casts further and walks easier without compromising the integrity and fish catching ability of the lure.

Screen Shot 2015-09-29 at 11.48.24 AMThe detailing and colors in the Lucky Craft lineup are second to none. Colors like Green Aurora Perch, and Aurora Black will call up big fish from the depths. The steady side to side sashay of the Gunfish combines with it’s flattened face to spit and slash its way through the water. A twitch-twitch-pause technique allows the internal rattles to roll to a stop as it settles. This allows tentative fish to home in on their meal before exploding on the Gunfish. The 2 super sharp trebles of the 95 and 115 models stick fish if they even think about sniffing this lure. A professionally tied rear treble comes standard on every lure and helps to coax those wary lunkers. The Gunfish is a great choice for targeting big fish throughout the size lineup but the new 135 size is built for extreme duties.

On lakes with blueback herring or even when used on mean saltwater fish this size is a proven producer. Tie it on and cast it a country or nautical mile. Most importantly, the gunfish is a fun bait to fish. What’s better than catching a monster on top water? No matter where you are in the country, this bait will get you more strikes and more fun days on the water. Good Fishing, Doug Cameron.
