Major League Fishing names Beshears Tournament Director
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, November 15, 2019 (Tulsa, Okla.) Major League Fishing (MLF) announced today that Aaron Beshears has accepted the position of Tournament Director for the Bass Pro Tour and MLF Cup events. Shortly after joining MLF in 2014 as a volunteer Official, Beshears was promoted to Lead Official in 2015. In late 2018 Beshears was one of the league’s first hires as MLF launched the Bass Pro Tour serving as Manager of Competition Crew Recruiting and Training throughout its inaugural year.
“Aaron did a fantastic job of recruiting, training, and deploying our battalion of League Officials,’ reflected Todd Walker, Senior Director of Operations for MLF. “With what seemed like an impossible task due to the shortened timeline, he turned into a huge success on which we will build for years to come, making him the perfect choice for this new role.”
Prior to joining MLF, Beshears retired from a 20-year career in law enforcement in 2010. His love for bass fishing, which began as a child in Oklahoma and Arkansas, led him to Major League Fishing where their conservation-friendly format appealed to him as a weekend tournament angler himself. When not at work, Aaron enjoys cooking barbeque with his wife Candice and their two children, Morghan and Taryn.

CHARGE and GATEWAY Now Available Nationwide
TAMPA, FL – The next evolution in Total Boat Control is now available to the public from JL Marine Systems, Inc., maker of Power-Pole Shallow Water Anchors. The CHARGE Marine Power Management Station and C-Monster GATEWAY will be available from authorized Power-Pole dealers and online at power-pole.com on November 22, 2019.
CHARGE Marine Power Management
The CHARGE is the most advanced power management system available that does the work of three devices — a traditional battery charger, a charge-on-the-run and an emergency start system–all in one compact unit. CHARGE monitors power use and puts power where it’s needed most — a feat no other battery charger system can accomplish.
CHARGE is the first bi-directional power management system that has the ability to move power from battery to battery. CHARGE manages your cranking and trolling motor batteries by taking power and moving it to where it’s needed. The CHARGE Marine Power Management Station gives you power where, how and when you need it.
JL Marine vice president Robert Shamblin: “One of the key components of having total boat control is the power you have on board. Being able to see exactly where your power levels are is essential to making decisions on the water. It allows you to know how much time you can run your trolling motor which is key to spending more time on the water and ultimately catching more fish. If you run out of power you’ll have to go home early.”
“As a marine manufacturing company, we are trying to solve problems on the water. Total boat control means managing your power consumption and how that power is distributed to all of the products that are vital for boaters throughout the day.”
JL Marine national sales manager Dan Benson: “We can’t wait to have these products on the shelves of our nearly 2,000 dealers nationwide. The CHARGE represents a major expansion of the company and like our Shallow Water Anchors, we will stand behind this product with the same level of service our customers have come to expect.”
Features:
- Automatically moves power back and forth between cranking and trolling batteries
- Displays battery voltage and status data on your smartphone, Power-Pole Vision, SIMRAD or Lowrance MFD unit (requires CM2 GATEWAY).
- Complete battery maintenance – uses float mode when plugged in at home
- Charges on the run from the alternator while the motor is running
- Works with all battery types – lead acid, AGM, GEL, lithium or TPPL
- Built-in emergency power transfer feature
C-Monster GATEWAY
The C-Monster GATEWAY lets you harness the power of the C-Monster 2.0 network to connect, customize and control your boat’s Power-Pole accessories like the CHARGE Marine Power Management Station using your existing devices such as the Lowrance or Simrad MFDs.
The GATEWAY allows for immediate adoption of the wireless CM2 protocol by existing devices currently using NMEA2000 technology. Keeping your boat up-to-date with the latest technology is as simple as adding your new GATEWAY-enabled devices to the network.
Shamblin: “The GATEWAY puts all of the vital information about your Power-Pole products on the devices that you are already using. It’s another way to make your time on the water a little easier.”
Features:
- Compatible with Lowrance and Simrad MFDs and other third-party devices
- Enables C-Monster functionality on existing accessories
- Instantly connect new accessories with the touch of a button
- Seamlessly integrates multiple systems to maximize efficiency

B.A.S.S. Announces New National Tournament Series For Kayak Anglers
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The popularity of kayak fishing is at an all-time high, just one of the reasons B.A.S.S., the world’s largest fishing organization, has formed a new tournament trail aimed specifically at kayaking enthusiasts.
B.A.S.S. is launching a five-tournament kayak trail with events in Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, Wisconsin and California. The series will culminate with a championship held in conjunction with the 2021 Bassmaster Classic. Photo courtesy of Old Town
Today, B.A.S.S. officials announced the schedule for the inaugural Huk Bassmaster B.A.S.S. Nation Kayak Series powered by TourneyX presented by Abu Garcia. The trail will feature five regular-season events in 2020 on well-known bass fisheries across the country with a championship to be held in conjunction with the 2021 Academy Outdoors + Sports Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk.
“You don’t have to look very hard these days to find a kayak in the bed of a truck or strapped to the roof of a SUV,” said Bruce Akin, CEO of B.A.S.S. “People are bass fishing from kayaks all over the world — and they’re doing it everywhere from big lakes and rivers to small creeks and ponds.
“With this new trail, we wanted to give those anglers an opportunity to show what they can do from a small craft.”
The inaugural tournament will be held in conjunction with the 50th edition of the Bassmaster Classic on Logan Martin Lake in Pell City, Ala., on March 5. Classic competition kicks-off on nearby Lake Guntersville the next morning. Other events will be held on Lake Fork in Lake Fork Marina, Texas (March 14), Chickamauga Lake in Dayton, Tenn. (May 23), the Mississippi River in La Crosse, Wis. (Aug. 15) and Clear Lake in Lakeport, Calif. (Aug. 29).
Entry fees for all of the events will be $250, and each will pay 30 places. Based on a full field of 150 kayaks, the total purse for each event will be $30,000.
“Huk is proud to work with B.A.S.S. on this exciting new tournament series designed to push the limits of kayak fishing,” said Melinda Hays, Freshwater Community Manager for Huk. “Bass fishing is an integral part of our DNA here at Huk and we endeavor to inspire anglers to explore their home waters by kayak.”
In addition to title sponsor Huk and presenting sponsor Abu Garcia, the kayak series is partnering with Old Town for the inaugural season.
“Abu Garcia is always looking for a way to connect with passionate anglers,” said Jon Schlosser, VP of marketing for Abu Garcia. “With so many people fishing for bass from kayaks now, this was the perfect partnership, allowing our brand to help serve a growing segment in the sportfishing community.”
Instead of a standard weigh-in that uses scales to measure pounds and ounces, anglers will practice “catch, photograph and release” to determine the standings.
When an angler catches a bass, he or she will photograph the fish lying on a standard-issue measuring board and submit the photo through a special mobile app provided by TourneyX. The boards will measure each fish in inches down to a quarter of an inch, and the angler with the longest five-bass limit will win.
“There will be certain criteria for the photograph to be deemed a valid photograph,” B.A.S.S. Nation Director Jon Stewart said. “It will have to show the fish’s nose touching a certain part of the board and the fish’s tail touching a line. It will also have to show the identifying mark on the board that is specific to that tournament.”
Once the photograph is submitted via the TourneyX app, a tournament director and judges will deem them legal or not and enter an official length. A real-time leaderboard will be available online during the tournament until an hour before weigh-in.
“This is pretty standard procedure for kayak tournament fishing,” Stewart said. “In fact, most tournament trails use this very same app when hosting kayak events.”
The Bassmaster B.A.S.S. Nation Kayak Series Championship will be held in conjunction with the 2021 Bassmaster Classic at a site to be determined. The top finishers from the kayak season will be recognized during Classic festivities.
“It’s just one more opportunity for bass anglers,” Stewart said. “That’s what we’re all about.”
Registration is now open online at https://ssl.palmcoastd.com/app/bass/registration/kayak/2020. Anglers must be a B.A.S.S. member to sign up.

Hollen Relies On Lipless Crankbait To Win B.A.S.S. Nation Championship At Lake Hartwell
ANDERSON, S.C. — Cody Hollen had a feeling that his favorite lipless crankbait would be a difference-maker during Friday’s final round of the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.
Boy, was he ever right.
Cody Hollen of Beaverton, Ore., won the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship with a three-day total of 32 pounds, 12 ounces.
The 35-year old angler from Beaverton, Ore., caught the heaviest bag of the tournament — a five-bass limit that weighed 13 pounds, 12 ounces — to vault from 10th place to the tournament title here on Lake Hartwell in the northwest corner of the Palmetto State.
Hollen finished with a three-day total of 32-12, and he reaped a wealth of spoils with the victory. Not only did he grab a berth in the 2020 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk, he also won a Skeeter/Yamaha cash award of $20,000, an invitation to fish the 2020 Bassmaster Elite Series and paid entry into the 2020 Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens division of his choice.
He was one of 59 boaters and 115 total anglers who qualified for the championship at Hartwell. Competitors hailed from 47 states and 11 foreign countries, and they competed for a total of $140,300 in prize money this week.
Hollen made the final push to jump ahead of all of them, and it was his decision to fish exclusively with a Yo-Zuri lipless crankbait in the chrome with a blue back color that paid dividends, he said. He tried other lures earlier in the tournament, but he eventually decided to forego variety for what was working best.
“I had confidence coming into today,” Hollen said. “I had five or six cane piles way down lake where the water was cleaner than it was up here. They were in those cane piles. I was setting myself up maybe 30 yards back of them and casting into them.
“The bait would hit the cane pile and the fish would hit it hard.”
Hollen was in 19th place after Day 1 with a limit that weighed 9-2, and he followed with a 9-14 limit on Day 2 to make the cut. He entered the final day in 10th place, but he trailed leader Justy Varkevisser of South Africa by only 3-5.
The win was a dream come true for Hollen, who qualified for the Championship via the B.A.S.S Nation trail in Oregon and the B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional held on California’s Lake Shasta in May.
Now he’s locked up a spot in the Classic, which will be held at Alabama’s Lake Guntersville on March 6-8. Weigh-ins will take place in Birmingham, the city where B.A.S.S is headquartered.
It’s all a new experience for Hollen, but he’s ready for the challenge.
“I have no idea of anything about Guntersville, but I’m going to go there and give it 110 percent,” he said.
So, too, will Taylor Smith and Cam Sterritt, who finished second and third in the Championship, respectively, and also earned spots in the Classic.
Smith, a 34-year old resident of Spokane Valley, Wash., caught a three-day total of 31-7. Sterritt, a 23-year old angler who lives in Newfields, N.H., caught 31-2.
Smith qualified for the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship as the leading boater from the Idaho Nation. Like Hollen, he also fished cane piles, though he opted to throw a football-head jig most of the tournament. He was in sixth place heading into Friday, and he moved up the standings courtesy of a 10-15 limit, which was the third heaviest of the day. He caught 10 pounds Wednesday and 10-8 Thursday.
“I’m feeling a lot of emotion,” Smith said. “I’ve been watching The Bassmasters (on television) with my dad as long as I can remember. It means a ton to make the Classic. I have more unread text messages in my pocket right now than ever. My support network is incredible.”
Sterritt caught a 10-7 limit Friday, which followed the 13-8 he weighed Thursday. That haul was the second-heaviest bag of the tournament. He caught all of his bass drop shotting or skipping a Neko rig under the docks jutting from Hartwell’s shorelines.
Though only 23, Sterritt has plenty experience in B.A.S.S. events. He began fishing Junior Bassmaster events when he was 10 and was part of the first High School National Championship in 2015.
“It really taught me how to compete in these tournaments,” he said.
Stanley Beebe, who lives in San Luis Obispo, Calif., clinched the nonboater division Thursday with a two-day total of 17-13. That was best among the 56 nonboaters competing at Hartwell, and it earned him a spot in Friday’s final round against the event’s top boaters.
Beebe won a $10,000 Skeeter/Yamaha cash prize for winning that division, as well as entry into the Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens division of his choice.
Scott Perrine of Bonneau, S.C., won the $1,000 Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for landing a 6-1 largemouth Wednesday.
Visit Anderson hosted the event.

B.A.S.S. Nation Schedule Expanded To Five Regions For 2020
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A big week for the TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation got even better today as B.A.S.S. announced an expanded Nation schedule for 2020.
After holding three regionals this year, B.A.S.S. Nation will hold five next season, with events in the Southeast, Western, Central, Northeast and Northern regions of the country.
The 2020 TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation is expanding to include five regional championships, including a new Western regional on Lake Mead in Henderson, Nev., on April 29-May 1. Photo: Ronnie Moore/B.A.S.S.
Each event will provide opportunities for everyday anglers to qualify for the 2020 TNT Fireworks B.A.S.S. Nation Championship, which is scheduled for Nov. 11-13 on Pickwick Lake in Florence, Ala.
“As we’ve seen in the past with anglers like Paul Mueller and Brandon Palaniuk — just to name a couple — the B.A.S.S. Nation can be the gateway to a career in professional fishing,” said B.A.S.S. Nation Director Jon Stewart. “Once you reach the Nation Championship, you’re fishing for a chance to fish in the Bassmaster Classic, and we’re excited this year to offer even more chances for anglers to do that.
“We truly believe this is one of the best schedules we’ve ever put together.”
The schedule will kick off with the Southeast Regional on Florida’s Lake Okeechobee on Jan. 29-31. That legendary fishery, which has hosted 22 major B.A.S.S. events, should be in prime form as its giant largemouth population heads to the shallows to spawn.
From Florida, the schedule will shift to the Western Regional at Lake Mead in Henderson, Nev., on April 29-May 1. Lake Mead was the site of the first Bassmaster Classic back in 1971.
The schedule will then work its way back East with the Central Regional at Toledo Bend Reservoir in Many, La., on May 28-30. Toledo Bend has hosted 18 major B.A.S.S. events and was ranked No. 1 on Bassmaster Magazine’s annual list of 100 Best Bass Lakes for back-to-back years in 2015-16.
“I don’t think you could ask for a better start than those three,” Stewart said. “Not only do you have great fishing, but you have some incredible history with three fisheries that have meant a lot to B.A.S.S. through the years.”
The schedule will swing to the upper regions of the United States with the Northeast Regional at Lake Erie/Presque Isle Bay in Erie, Pa., on June 24-26. Then, the final regular-season event will be held at picturesque Lake Vermillion in Tower, Minn., on Aug. 26-28.
“The B.A.S.S. Nation means so much to so many different people,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “For weekend anglers, it is a chance to compete for big money on a big stage. Then for those anglers who aspire to fish professionally, it can certainly be a great stepping stone for that.”
The 2020 B.A.S.S. Nation Championship on Alabama’s Pickwick Lake will be made up of qualifiers from all five regions, as well as international qualifiers from 11 foreign countries. The Top 3 anglers from the overall standings — both boater and nonboater divisions — will earn a berth to the 2021 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk.
The winner of the 2020 B.A.S.S. Nation Championship will also receive paid entry fees into the 2021 Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens Series division of the angler’s choice and use of a tournament-ready Nitro or Triton boat.
Many aspiring pros have seized the opportunity to qualify for the Bassmaster Elite Series, including 2018 B.A.S.S. Nation Championship winner Randy Pierson of California.
“The support from the Nation and people that fish the Nation has just been incredible,” said Pierson, who earned $40,000 in nine events on the 2019 Elite Series. “The opportunity that the Nation has given me, providing the boat and Jon Stewart’s support and the support from everyone at B.A.S.S. has been incredible.”
