Justin Atkins Rocks Bassmaster Open For A Win On Logan Martin Lake

Justin Atkins of Florence, Ala., won the 2018 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open No. 4 held on Logan Martin Lake, with a three-day total of 38 pounds, 3 ounces.

PELL CITY, Ala. — Justin Atkins has never been happier to admit he was wrong than he was on the final day of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open at Pell City Lakeside Park. The bass fishing pro from Florence, Ala., caught heavier bass than he thought he could and surged from eighth place to win the event with a three-day total of 38 pounds, 3 ounces.

Atkins started the final round 2 pounds, 14 ounces off the lead. The lingering woes of a frustrating practice had him less than confident in pulling off the win. Nevertheless, weighing 13-11 — the day’s heaviest catch — sealed the victory.

“I really thought I was going to catch 7 pounds a day and go on to the house,” Atkins said. “I made a joke with one of my buddies that I’m going to have to eat my words if I turn around and win this tournament. I was complaining to him about how terrible my practice was, so I guess I’ll have to apologize to him.”

Atkins worked the same pattern he fished the latter half of Day 1 and all of Day 2. He started the first day by targeting big fish in shallow water around the Interstate 20 bridge crossing the lake and caught a key 3-pounder that anchored his 11-11 bag.

After checking several of the offshore schools he had located, Atkins realized he wasn’t upgrading his weight, so he ran upriver to an area within about 12 miles of the Neely Henry Dam and spotted a row of rocks with fish set up perfectly for the current situation.

A furious rally completed his limit and prompted Atkins to spend that evening studying his Lakemaster mapping chip to identify similar areas. He ended up locating several between 8 and 15 miles from the dam, in depths of 10 to 15 feet.

“I noticed how much rock was out in the river, so the second day, once the water came on, I went up there and started idling,” he said. “I wouldn’t even fish until I saw them. I found a spot that ended up being really key. I caught all of my fish there today and most of them yesterday.

“I started every morning on those shallow schools and would catch between 10 and 12 pounds and then went up there to make some key culls. It was just a one-two combination that worked out pretty good.”

Atkins caught his morning fish on a 1/4-ounce shaky head with a green pumpkin Berkley Bottom Hopper worm. On the river rocks, he used the shaky head in slower current and then switched to a Berkley PowerBait Rib Shad on a 1/2-ounce swimbait head in swifter water.

Mark Rose, of Wynne, Ark., finished second with 37-5. After posting weights of 13-10 and 13-12, Rose entered the final round in first place, but slipped one spot after adding 9-15.

“I did exactly what I’d been doing every day and had the exact same bag, minus the two 3 1/2-pounders I caught both of the previous two days,” Rose said. “I just never got those big bites today. I probably didn’t adjust as well as I should have today, but I scratched and clawed and was able to catch (nearly) 10 pounds.”

Rose caught his Day 3 bass by dragging a Strike King football jig with a Strike King Rage Tail Menace trailer and a flipping a Texas-rigged Strike King Rage Bug into grass.

Joshua Stracner, of Vandiver, Ala., took third with 37-2. After placing 35th on day one with 10-5, he improved to second on Day 2 after catching 14-14 — the second day’s heaviest bag and the second heaviest of the tournament. He caught 11-15 in the final round.

“I only had three fish at 11 o’clock — two little keepers and a 2-pounder,” Stracner said. “About lunchtime, they turned on, and I started catching some keepers. With about 30 minutes left to fish, I went to a boat dock close to take off and caught my biggest one, a 3 1/2-pounder. Everything I weighed in this week came on a 1/2-ounce Dirty Jigs Scott Canterbury flipping jig with a Zoom Super Chunk Jr.”

In the co-angler division, William Mcnutt II of Bossier City, La., relied solely on a shaky head to win with a three-day total of 19-3. He used a green pumpkin Zoom Finesse Worm the first two days, but when he faced dirtier water on Day 3, Mcnutt switched to a junebug Zoom Trick Worm.

“Those last two fish came in the last hour,” Mcnutt said. “I was really down, but my line started swimming and I set the hook and about had a heart attack. Then three casts later, I caught that last one.”

The Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the tournament was awarded to Joshua Stracner of Vandiver, Ala., for a 5-12 largemouth on the pro side worth $750. In the co-angler division, John Roberson of Shreveport, La., won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass worth $250 with a 4-8 largemouth.

Mark Rose of Wynne, Ark., won the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash Award of $500 for being the highest-placing angler who is registered and eligible and uses a client-approved product on his boat.

Texas’ Hall Goes Wire-to-Wire, Wins Costa FLW Series Northern Division Finale on 1000 Islands

CLAYTON, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2018) – Pro Kyle Hall of Rio Vista, Texas, brought five bass weighing 18 pounds, 10 ounces, to the scale Saturday to win the Costa FLW Series Northern Division finale on 1000 Islands presented by Navionics. Hall’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 68 pounds, 11 ounces, was enough to earn him the win and a check for $45,700.

“I don’t even know what to say right now. I’m still in shock – it hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Hall, who notched his first win in FLW competition. “I knew coming into the first day I had a chance to do well based on how my practice went. It’s the first time I’ve ever been up here and it’s the best place I’ve been in terms of hospitality and fishing. You can’t go anywhere else in the world and catch 6-pound smallmouth on a daily basis.”

Hall fished both the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario this week. On day one, he fished the river and was able to put together a solid limit within a couple of hours.

“I caught 26 pounds by 9:30 (a.m.) Thursday,” said Hall. “I got about 25 pounds off one spot – a main-river current break. It had a few big rocks and went from about 40 to 20 feet, and then off to the side it came up from 50 to 35 feet. I caught a 5-pounder at another stop and by then I knew I wanted to be done and save fish.”

On Friday, Hall returned to his current break, but couldn’t get anything going. He said he decided to make his way to Lake Ontario and was able to put a 6-pounder in the boat near Stony Island. From there, he worked through 15 to 20 stops to piece together a limit.

“I ran points that went out to the middle of the lake. Some had boulders – maybe 8 to 10 of them – and I just ran through them multiple times,” said Hall. “I caught my limit by 1:30 p.m. and spent the rest of the day helping my co-angler out.”

On Saturday, Lake Ontario was deemed off-limits by FLW officials due to high wind and waves. Hall said he returned to his current break once again, but ended up moving somewhere different due to the wind.

“I ran to an area in Canadian waters where I figured I could catch a limit. At about 8:30 (a.m.) I found that my drift paddles were really helping me out,” said Hall. “The wind was going one way and the current was going the other, but my paddles pulled me and I moved with the current. Without them, my boat would’ve been sitting on top the fish I targeted. They’re highly pressured and probably would’ve been spooked, but I was able to cast straight out in front of me and have my bait come right across their faces without my boat sitting over them.”

Hall caught his fish this week on a drop-shot rig using a 3-inch Natural Shad-colored Berkley Powerbait MaxScent Flatnose Minnow. He said he also threw a 3-inch Smelt-colored Berkley Gulp Minnow on a drop-shot rig early in the morning or when it got cloudy. Hall preferred 2/0-sized VMC Sureset hooks on 20-pound-test PowerPro Super Slick line with a 10-pound-test Seaguar InvizX flourocarbon leader. His line was spooled on a Shimano 15 Stradic C3000 reel attached to a 6-foot, 10-inch, G-Loomis NRX rod.

“I used 5/8-ounce weights throughout the week, and a 1-ounce weight today because of the wind,” said Hall. “I caught every fish looking at my Lowrance electronics this week – my favorite way to fish, by far.”

Early Bites Benefit Connell On Logan Martin Lake

Dustin Connell of Clanton, Ala., took the lead on the first day of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open No. 4 held on Logan Martin Lake. Connell brought 15 pounds, 3 ounces to the scales at Thursday’s weigh-in.

PELL CITY, Ala. —  Dustin Connell, of Clanton, Ala., leveraged a double dose of early opportunity on Logan Martin Lake to take the Day 1 lead at the final Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open at Pell City Lakeside Park with a limit catch of 15 pounds, 3 ounces.

With summer’s sticky hot conditions stubbornly lingering, this Coosa River reservoir yielded plenty of smaller fish, but big bites were few and far between. Connell caught these fish dragging baits in 12 feet of water.

“I had two key bites early this morning, and if I hadn’t gotten those two bites, I would have been struggling all day,” Connell said. “I think that’s the biggest thing about this time of year; you have to capitalize on that early bite.”

After buoying his bag with a pair in the 4-pound range, Connell struggled to work through the boat traffic to access one of his key offshore spots. Also working to his detriment was an earlier flight, which limited the amount of time he had to fish the afternoon’s peak current flow.

“I’m fishing for spotted bass, and when they cut on the water, you can catch them; but I don’t have a lot of time to catch them,” he said. “Hopefully they run that water tomorrow and I can do it again.”

During the current flow, Connell switched to a reaction presentation and caught keepers on a couple different swimbaits.

Frank Talley of Temple, Texas, is in second place with 14-0. Launching near the tail end of the last flight afforded Talley only a little bit of the morning bite, but he managed to catch a couple of early keepers on a spinnerbait, before moving deeper and filling his limit on Carolina rig and a shaky head, both with green pumpkin finesse worms.

“Out deep, I’m fishing anywhere from 18 to 22 feet,” Talley said. “It has to have bait around and it has to have brush.”

Bo Hunter of Gardendale, Ala,. is in third place with 13-11. Targeting areas with current, Hunter fished slowly with a mix of baits including a shaky head with the 4.5 Reaction Innovations Pocket Rocket and a finesse jig with a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver trailer. His largest fish, a largemouth, bit a Reaction Innovations Vixen topwater.

“The key was how the fish sit on the rocky spots I was targeting,” Hunter said. “Those spotted bass like it when the bait comes over from the other side and falls down.”

Billy Billeaud of Lafayette, La. is in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 5-2.

Blake Canella, of Plaquemine, La., leads the co-angler division with 7-10. Canella started his day by dragging a Missile Baits flipping jig with a green pumpkin Strike King Rage Tail Menace and caught keepers on his first two casts. He added a third keeper a couple hours later.

James Glover, of Crestview, Fla. holds the Phoenix Boats Big Bass lead among co-anglers with a 4-7.

Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 6:15 a.m. CT at Pell City Lakeside Park. The weigh-in will be held at the park at 4 p.m.

The event is hosted by the City of Pell City and Pell City Chamber of Commerce.

Marketing Partners Abu Garcia, Berkley and MLF Thrive on Innovation and Change

TULSA, Okla. (Sept. 4, 2018) – Abu Garcia and Berkley, two of fishing’s oldest and most respected brands, are new Major League Fishing (MLF) sponsors for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Abu Garcia and Berkley have a history of aligning with top marketing partners and MLF has been Outdoor Channel’s No. 1-rated show in Q1 for the past three years, so the teaming should come as no surprise.

“Abu Garcia and Berkley are iconic brands in the world of fishing that were built on innovation and the desire to help anglers catch more fish,” said Pure Fishing Vice President of Marketing Jon Schlosser. “Major League Fishing’s format is exciting to watch and appeals to all types of anglers. With many of our pros competing in the MLF events, we’re excited to be able to support them and these two great brands through our sponsorship affiliation.”

MLF Pro Mike Iaconelli snatches a scorable bass from vegetative cover as his boat official monitors the catch. The other anglers will soon know about this fish as the information is shared real time via iPads among those in the same MLF competition.
“Abu Garcia and Berkley have a longstanding history in sport fishing, and their products are common in anglers’ households everywhere,” said MLF President Jim Wilburn. “Their line, lures, reels, rods and accessories bring innovation and quality to every level of participation, and their pro staff represents most of fishing’s highest achievements, ranging from championship titles to record fish.”

Abu Garcia was founded in Sweden in 1921. Berkley got its start in 1937. Today both are part of the Pure Fishing family of brands consisting of several industry stalwarts, including Hardy, Shakespeare, Pflueger, Penn, Hodgman, Stren, Spider Wire and others. Pure Fishing is owned by Newell Brands.

Major League Fishing was developed through a joint effort between Outdoor Channel and two-dozen premier bass fishing anglers in 2011.

There are no secrets as to the “where and how” Bobby Lane and other MLF anglers catch their bass during the Outdoor Channel’s top-rated Q1 show because the cameras are rolling.
Two pools of MLF professional anglers compete in events: the MLF Cup group includes most of the original founding anglers, and newer is the MLF Selects, which consists of another group of pros.

The TV show’s format features the anglers going head-to-head in live competition during which all “scorable bass” count in a catch-and-release format. Every competitor has a cameraman and live microphone on board, giving viewers an in-the-boat experience and live updates throughout the event.

MLF airs on CBS, CBS Sports Network, Discovery, WFN and Outdoor Channel.

About Major League Fishing
Developed through a joint effort between Outdoor Channel and two-dozen premier bass fishing anglers in 2011, Major League Fishing brings the high-intensity sport of competitive bass fishing into America’s living rooms in the form of riveting two-hour TV episodes. World-class anglers are filmed over the course of a six-day event. The show captures their efforts as they utilize a demanding format that allows them to weigh all the “scorable bass” they catch. Unlike other competitive fishing events, live leaderboards in the boats allow anglers to know their standings at all times. For more information about the game, visit MajorLeagueFishing.com and follow Major League Fishing on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
