Hartman Comes From Behind To Win Bassmaster Elite Series Event At Cayuga Lake
UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. — On Sunday afternoon, for the second time in three tournaments, Jamie Hartman claimed a Bassmaster Elite Series victory.
Both were special. But he couldn’t deny this one meant just a little more.
Fishing in his home state of New York, Jamie Hartman came from behind to win on the final day of the 2019 SiteOne Bassmaster Elite at Cayuga Lake with a four-day total of 80 pounds, 13 ounces. Photo by Seigo Saito/B.A.S.S.
Fishing in his home state of New York, Hartman caught five bass that weighed 22 pounds, 4 ounces Sunday and jumped from fourth place into the winner’s spot at the SiteOne Bassmaster Elite at Cayuga Lake with a four-day total of 80-13.
After all the bass had been weighed, Hartman carried the blue trophy into a boisterous crowd of fans who were eager to hug and high-five their hometown favorite. It was a stark contrast to the celebration he was basically denied when he earned his first victory two months ago at Lake Guntersville and a severe thunderstorm rolled through just as he was handed the trophy.
“It just couldn’t be any better than this,” Hartman said. “For it to happen right here in my home state with all of my family here, it’s incredibly special.
“This is where my heart is. It’ll be hard to top this — ever.”
Hartman was one of the few anglers all week whose trajectory was consistently headed upward. He caught 16-14 Thursday, 19-9 Friday, 22-2 Saturday and 22-4 Sunday.
He spent all week fishing with two baits — a 4.75-inch Synth Worm from Riot Baits in green pumpkin neon on a drop-shot rig and a shad-colored crankbait he said is no longer in production.
He said his weights went up every day because he slowly learned the sweet spots of the area he was fishing on the North end of the lake.
“I had found a place on the South end during practice that was just loaded with them,” he said. “That’s where I started, and they just weren’t in there. I left there with only about 14 pounds and went back up to one little area of grass I found back up North.
“I decided to stick with that the rest of the week, and I learned which parts of it I needed to be fishing and which ones I didn’t have to bother with.”
Hartman said the green pumpkin neon pattern, which is a two-toned worm with green pumpkin on one side and chartreuse on the other, seemed perfect for the water color at Cayuga. He dyed the tail chartreuse to add even more color.
His crankbait bite was best when there was at least a little wind blowing. So, when he found slick calm conditions Sunday morning, he panicked and decided to run to the South end of the lake in an effort to catch one more big bass fishing boat docks.
After fishing 15 docks without a bite, he ran back North.
“As I was running to the South end, I could see that wind was finally putting a little bit of a ripple on the water,” Hartman said. “I started to just turn around and go right back to fish the crankbait. But I knew I would be able to tell pretty fast if the dock bite was happening — and it wasn’t.”
His decision to leave the docks proved to be the right one as he quickly landed a 4-pounder on the crankbait that put him over the top.
“Everything happens for a reason,” he said. “If I don’t make that run to the South — if I just stay where I was — maybe I don’t catch that 4-pounder. It worked out just right.”
Without that final big fish, Hartman would have come up short at the scales. His final total of 80-13 was just 10 ounces better than that of second-place angler Jeff Gustafson (80-3) and less than 2 pounds better than third-place pro Chris Zaldain (79-0).
Hartman’s second $100,000 first-place check of the season brought his career earnings with B.A.S.S. to just over $458,000. He only joined the Elite Series three years ago, and he missed several tournaments last season with back issues.
“The first win was awesome, coming back after everything that happened last year,” Hartman said. “I had missed everything that I had worked so hard for my whole life.
“This is all I’ve ever wanted to do — and to have this happen here today in New York, is literally my dream coming true.”
The Phoenix Boats Big Bass award of $1,500 went to Derek Hudnall for the 8 pound, 1 ounce giant he landed on Day 1 of the tournament.
Hartman earned $3,000 in Toyota Bonus Bucks for being the highest placing angler to drive a Toyota, while Brandon Lester earned an extra $2,000 for being the second highest-placing pro to drive a Toyota.

Palaniuk Edges out Rose and Ashley for Final Spot in REDCREST Championship
LA CROSSE, Wis. – Only five more spots were up for grabs in Knockout Round 2 of REDCREST Presented by Venmo, but much of the focus today was on just one of those spots. Greg Hackney, Zack Birge, Fred Roumbanis and Brent Ehrler locked up four spots rather quickly thanks to their impressive days. That left the remaining six anglers in a heated battle for that last spot in Sunday’s Championship Round. By Mason Prince – August 24, 2019

Brandon Palaniuk, Mark Rose and Casey Ashley jostled back-and-forth over the final hour for that fifth-place position, but it was Palaniuk’s 48 pounds, 4 ounces that cemented his opportunity for a one-in-10 chance at $300,000. The Idaho pro caught seven bass for 10-10 over the final hour of competition, giving him a 4-14 cushion over Mark Rose.
“It was pretty intense,” Palaniuk said afterwards as he was organizing a box of crankbaits. “I was staying calm and trying to stay focused on making good casts. I moved to an area that I haven’t fished all week and pulled out my crankbait. There was a ton of boat traffic today where I had normally been fishing and I think that traffic pushed the fish back more into this channel I found.”
Rough Ending for Rose
There are two sides to every coin, however. After a magical day in the Elimination Round, Mark Rose is feeling the sting of defeat as he prepares for a long drive back to Arkansas. Rose had an area that worked very well for him during the Elimination Round and told me just how important that area would be heading into his Knockout Round. But the bunches of bites he had found on Thursday were few and far between on Saturday.
“I had a lot of confidence in an area right above the I-90 bridge and I just feel like the pressure really got to those fish,” Rose said. “Edwin Evers and Greg Vinson hit that spot yesterday I think and it just caused the fish to run out of there. I probably stayed there too long today trying to make it happen. I got beat today, hats off to Brandon.”
Ashley Thankful for Season
Casey Ashley’s shot at a REDCREST Championship is over after his 42-6 day. The South Carolina pro had plenty of different baits on his deck, but just wasn’t seeing the bites that were there for him earlier in the week. His seventh-place finish isn’t how he wanted his season to end, but he leaves Wisconsin with no regrets.
“I wouldn’t have done anything differently, I just couldn’t get enough bites,” Ashley explained. “Boat traffic really deterred my ability to catch fish today. I came close, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. I’m happy with my season just making REDCREST against this group of 80 guys. It’s a high-stress format but I’m really happy to be here and thankful for this year.”
Predicting Pool 7
Palaniuk now turns his attention to Pool 7 of the Mississippi River, a new challenge for himself and his nine competitors. The anglers were allowed to ride around on Pool 7, but were not allowed to bring any rods on their boat. It’s going to be a challenge for them, but Palaniuk says that he knows that there is plenty of fish to catch.
“The first period might be kind of slow with guys trying to figure out how to catch them,” Palaniuk predicted. “I think if you’re around 50 to 60 pounds you’ll have a really good shot. But, it could be 100 pounds because there’s a lot of fish in that pool, who knows. I’m really looking forward to it though.”

Gustafson Struggles On Day 3, But Holds On To Lead At Bassmaster Elite On Cayuga Lake
UNION SPRINGS, N.Y. — As Jeff Gustafson struggled through a difficult Saturday at the SiteOne Bassmaster Elite at Cayuga Lake, he assumed he would probably fall out of the lead.
What he didn’t know is that most of the field was struggling right along with him — and despite catching five bass that weighed only 15 pounds, 4 ounces, he held on to first place with a three-day total of 64-5.
The Canadian pro will now lead the Top 10 remaining anglers into Championship Sunday with a chance to earn his first Bassmaster Elite Series victory and the $100,000 paycheck that goes with it.
“Today went by a lot quicker than the last two days when I had those big bags,” said Gustafson, who started the event with catches of 23-11 and 25-6. “I’m pretty surprised to be in this position. Hopefully I can close the door and catch those big fish again like I did the first two days.”
Despite his Day 3 dropoff, Gustafson has more than a 4-pound lead over second-place angler Chris Zaldain (60-0), who also struggled Saturday bringing in only 14 pounds. Minnesota pro Seth Feider caught just 15-14 and is in third with 58-11.
Gustafson was shocked to still be at the top of the standings.
“I was pretty sure I would have enough to stay in the Top 10,” he said. “But I figured I’d be probably fourth or fifth and playing catchup.
“I figured there would be another parade of 20-pound bags.
Many anglers were scratching their heads about why the quality of fishing took a nosedive Saturday. But some believed a cold front that blew into the region Friday evening was at least partly to blame.
After two days of bright sunshine, conditions were cloudy and cool Saturday — and Zaldain said it seemed to upset the entire ecosystem.
“The first thing I noticed was that the start of the food chain wasn’t like it was yesterday,” he said. “It starts with alewives. From there, the yellow perch eat those, the white perch eat them, even the bluegill eat them.
“On all of my best spots the first two days, it seemed like the whole food chain lived there. But today those little alewives weren’t there, and that just ruined a lot of the feeding activity.”
Like Gustafson, Zaldain has been fishing mostly offshore structure — and he said he intends to start offshore again Sunday. But if he sees quickly that it isn’t working, he plans to look elsewhere.
“I’ll have to think about it tonight,” he said. “I might fish a swimbait around some docks or something like that. I’m not sure what it’ll be. But if my first two spots aren’t cracking, I’ll have to do something different.”
The disappointment was obvious in Feider’s voice after he weighed in 15-14 — down from 21-8 and 21-5 the first two days. He also believed Saturday’s weather conditions played a role in his change of fortunes — and he’s hoping the front passes quickly.
“I’m praying for sun and a South wind,” he said. “I’ve got some stuff on the South end of the lake that I haven’t fished yet because it wouldn’t have been good on these days with a North wind.
“I think I can catch a big bag down there if it’s sunny and the wind is blowing out of the South.”
During the first two rounds, there were 28 five-bass limits brought to the scales that weighed 20 pounds or more. On Saturday, only three anglers cracked the 20-pound mark.
One of those anglers was New York native Jamie Hartman, who had the best catch of the day with 22-2. Hartman moved into fourth place with 58-9 — and considering he’s already come from 10th place on the final day to win an event Lake Guntersville earlier this year, he’s certainly within striking distance.
Alabama pro Scott Canterbury, who had been fishing one small spot most of the week, finally ran out of fish and brought only 9-10 to the scales. He finished 11th with 54-12, missing the Top 10 cut by only 7 ounces.
Canterbury held on to his lead in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings with a total of 679 points. Florida pro Drew Cook, a rookie from Florida, is in second with 660.
Cook caught only 14-7 Saturday, but made the Sunday cut in ninth place with 55-3. He maintained his lead in the race for DICK’S Sporting Goods Rookie of the Year.
Louisiana’s Derek Hudnall still holds the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the week with an 8-1 largemouth.
The tournament concludes Sunday, with the Top 10 remaining pros taking off at 6:30 a.m. ET from Frontenac Park. The weigh-in will be held back at the park at 3 p.m.

Late Summer Bass Tactics with Chris Lane
The searing heat of summertime may dissuade some bass anglers from hitting the water but not Power–Pole ambassador Chris Lane. Lane plies his waters of the Tennessee River throughout the lazy, hazy days of summer and imparts a three-prong strategy focusing on times of day to successfully target largemouth bass.
“Morning hours are prime time,” says Lane. “Not only is it cooler out for the angler, but bass feel that comfortable cooling period and feed with more aggression.” Lane sets up on grass flats in 1 to 2 foot of water during sunup hours, pushing the Power Pole down in the shallows and working the surface with topwater poppers. “I use the River 2 Sea Whopper Popper and Lane Changer, casting over the grass flats and chugging the lure across the surface at a slow to moderate pace. Big fish feed during the morning hours in summer so I expect to get the largest of the bass during that time.”
Once the sun is high in the sky, Lane goes deeper to find schooling fish. “Usually the Tennessee River starts flowing in the afternoon as people start using their air conditioners which pulls water for energy. That’s when the fish push out to the ledges in about 12 to 20 feet of water. I put the Pole down just outside the ledge and start working down deep along the slopes with crankbaits, Lucky Strike football jigs or worms in plum, mud bug and black and blue colorings.”
Lane slows his retrieve down, allowing for bass to key in on the lures in the sluggish temps. “I’ll keep casting to the same spots once I find a hit as bass are schooling up during the day. Where you find one fish, you’re bound to find a few more.”
As the sun begins to drop, Lane reverts back to tossing topwaters. “Sunset fishing means creating commotion again on the surface. At dusk, bass are pushing and pinning baitfish up to the top. Any lures showing off blurping, spitting action will get a strike as fish will be busting on top crashing bait schools.”
Throughout the summer, from sunup to sundown, Lane advises to adapt tactics from shallow to deeper waters to find bucketmouth bass on the feed. Once the fish are located, use your Power–Pole to keep you planted where you need to be.
Defending Champions Maintain Lead On Day 2 Of High School Championship
PARIS, Tennessee – Two hurdles cleared and only one more to go for Grayson Morris and Tucker Smith at the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.
Grayson Morris and Tucker Smith of Briarwood Christian School out of Alabama maintain the lead on Day 2 at the 2019 Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School Championship at Kentucky Lake out of Paris, Tenn., with a total of 37 pounds, 6 ounces. Photo by Brenden Kanies/B.A.S.S.
The tournament’s defending champions maintained their lead on the 300-team field by catching a limit of five bass Friday that weighed 17 pounds, 11 ounces. That gave them a two-day total of 37-6, which is more than 4 pounds heavier than their nearest challenger for the championship.
Morris and Smith are representing Briarwood Christian School, which is located in Birmingham, Ala. Morris, 18, recently graduated from the school, and Smith, 17, is a rising senior.
Though they stayed atop the leaderboard, Morris and Smith struggled again on Friday to find keeper bites.
They had only one bass in the live well at 11 a.m., which had them concerned. They aren’t alone, as Kentucky Lake has been difficult for many teams to read this week. On Friday, 129 duos failed to weigh a fish, and on Thursday, 97 teams met a similar fate.
Morris and Smith caught their fifth keeper just before 3 p.m. Friday and headed to Paris Landing State Park for weigh-in, confident they had enough to hang onto the lead.
“We were pretty relaxed this morning, just wanting to go out and have fun,” Morris said. “But we were boat 300 today, so I had some butterflies waiting to go. When we didn’t get a bite until 10:30 a.m., I was like ‘Oh no.’ We wound up only getting a bite like every two hours.”
“You try not to think about it. You just have to go out and fish,” Smith said.
The duo is hoping to catch a limit much earlier on Saturday, but they’re prepared for another day of hard work to keep their lead and win consecutive national titles.
“We’ve just got to keep grinding,” Morris said. “We’ll keep the trolling motor in the water.”
Smith said they encountered some angling pressure on Friday, but that’s shouldn’t be the case on Saturday with the field cut to 12 after the Day 2 weigh-in.
“It’s a new day,” Smith said.
While some teams have fought to figure out Kentucky Lake, Mercedes Ellis and Gage Sherrod are not one of them.
Ellis and Sherrod, who attend Henry County (Tenn.) High School just a few miles down U.S. 79 from Paris Landing State Park, caught a 19-4 limit on Friday, which was the heaviest of the day. Their two-day total of 33-1 has them in second place overall.
The locals focused on brush piles through the first two days of the tournament and plan to do so again with a championship in their sights.
“We know a ton of spots here,” Sherrod said. “Every day we’ve fished in practice and in the tournament, we’ve averaged about 16 or 17 pounds. When you have all these people from around the country, some of them get on the fish more than others. We know the bites will be slow, but we know the fish are there and we know how to catch them. We just have to stay patient.”
Ellis had the big bass of the day – a 6-5 kicker she pulled from a pocket that had sticks to provide structure and a ditch draining into it.
“Everyone definitely heard me (yelling) when I caught it,” Ellis said. “There was a lot of excitement.”
Daelyn Whaley and Lilly Smith from Abbeville (S.C.) High are in third place with 32-8 over two days. They are fishing shallow water; a strength they learned at home.
Whaley and Smith struggled, too, on Friday morning, but their favorite spot turned on again around noon, and they soon had a limit in the livewell.
“It’s the spot, but it’s the presentation, too,” Whaley said of her team’s success. “We don’t fish offshore. Even if they’re catching offshore, we don’t like to. We’re doing what we like to do, and that helps a lot. Also, we had to push and work our way in there. It’s hard work, but it’s been worth it.”
Whaley has fished in four consecutive national championships and she’s now made the top 12 in three of those years, and with three different partners, to boot.
Smith said she thinks a national title is possible.
“We could have kept catching them today, but we didn’t to pressure them too bad,” Smith said. “When we thought we had enough to qualify for (Saturday,) we decided to leave some for tomorrow.”
Each of the 300 teams competing in the championship qualified via four different Bassmaster High School Series events this year or their respective state team trails.
A total of $22,000 in scholarship awards will be split among the Top 12 teams in the championship. The winning duo will earn a $4,500 gift that will help fund each angler’s college education.
Taj White and Ethan Ryan of the Arizona high School B.A.S.S. Nation still lead for Big Bass of the Tournament with the 6-14 largemouth they caught Thursday.
The third and final day of competition will begin with a 6 a.m. CT take-off from Paris Landing State Park. Weigh-in will begin at 2 p.m., also from the state park.
The Carroll County (Tenn.) Tourism Authority, Henry County (Tenn.) and Bethel University are hosting the event.
